Students returned to schools in the West Contra Costa County School District. on August 15.
It is hard to believe, since weather has been so cool and cloudy lately in El Cerrito, but summer is almost over for thousands of students in our community.
One of the reliable rituals of the summer season is the annual Summer Reading Program sponsored by the El Cerrito Library that helps our students keep their reading skills sharp during the summer months. In some cases it even helps improve these valuable learning skills.

Recently, when the 2023 program ended, over 150 students who completed their “Reading Passports” received a gift book from the Library that was an important addition to their personal libraries.
Donations to the El Cerrito Library Foundation purchased these books that represent a tangible recognition of the pleasurable reading that hundreds of students put in this summer. Thank You to our donors for the resources that support this valuable program.
If we had a larger, new library with more room for programs like this, there would be many other opportunities to do creative, innovative programming to support lifelong learning for patrons of all ages.
Fortunately, the El Cerrito City Council, the Friends of the El Cerrito Library, our Library Foundation, and many enthusiastic Library supporters are working to build a new 21st Century library of adequate size and with modern features and equipment to serve our growing El Cerrito community.
We will keep you up to date on developments regarding a new library with occasional news reports from the Foundation. If you know of others who might be interested in keeping track of this project, direct them to our Foundation web site where they can sign up for breaking news.
